AI Mills builds first complete AI infrastructure in the Netherlands
Bussum, 7 May 2026 – AI infrastructure is increasingly becoming a fundamental building block of the modern economy. Until now, we have depended on non-European providers for AI. AI Mills is changing that and is providing the Netherlands with powerful, sovereign AI infrastructure without overburdening the electricity grid.
An AI factory is critical infrastructure. It is where companies develop and use AI in their business processes. Organizations without AI in their processes will increasingly lose out to companies that do use this technology. That makes this infrastructure indispensable for our economy. Not only in commercial enterprise, but also in sectors such as healthcare and defense. Yet AI infrastructure at this scale hardly exists in the Netherlands today, which means we remain dependent on non-European providers. An undesirable situation, especially given the current geopolitical tensions.
AI Mills is building this AI infrastructure, which is critical and indispensable for a future-proof Europe. Fully on home soil, within European legislation and compliance. Nick Jacobs of AI Mills: “It is as if cars are being built all over the world and people want to drive them, but the Netherlands still has no highways. AI Mills is building those highways, so we have our own infrastructure, independent of third parties.”
Outsmarting grid congestion
The biggest obstacle in the Netherlands, however, is energy and grid congestion. That is why AI Mills has developed a new approach to build this AI infrastructure quickly and at scale anyway. Nick Jacobs: “We are not developing one mega data center, but several smaller AI factories that we are deploying throughout the Netherlands. Just as powerful, but more flexible and agile. In locations where energy is abundant or in surplus, for example where wind turbines and/or solar panels are present, so that we make use of more sustainable energy. Because of this flexibility, very rapid scaling is possible, precisely in line with the pace and direction in which the AI market is developing.”
A complete AI infrastructure
In addition to pure compute power, the so-called GPU-as-a-Service, AI Mills has the AI Marketplace: a platform on which companies can directly use AI applications, such as language models (LLMs), AI agents, image and video models. This AI Marketplace is unique and has not previously been made available in the Netherlands. Jacobs: “Think of it as a library from which you can ‘borrow’ models as needed, to further train and develop them yourself. Building from scratch is therefore no longer necessary, because with access to, among others, NVIDIA’s library, there is plenty of choice in foundation models. This saves companies and governments a lot of development time, which results in significant cost savings.”
Made in Holland
AI Mills takes grid congestion, surroundings and sustainability into account. “It is our ambition to make the Netherlands more future-proof. And with these AI data centers, we stimulate the emergence and growth of new enterprises and the attraction and retention of human talent. That way, we put the Netherlands back on the map”, says Jacobs.
