Why AI Mills Is Relevant to the Dutch AI Strategy

In recent years, AI has largely been about applications such as ChatGPT and intelligent software. But behind all those systems is something just as important: computing power. Without massive amounts of processing capacity, modern AI simply does not work.

AI Mills is addressing the growing need for European AI infrastructure. In doing so, the company aligns well with a recent report from think tank HCSS (The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies), which warns that Europe risks becoming too dependent on American tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. According to HCSS, access to AI computing power will soon be as strategically important as energy, ports, and telecom networks.

For this reason, AI Mills is building a Dutch and European version of that infrastructure. The company is explicitly focused on keeping AI capacity in Europe, under European regulations, and therefore with greater control over data and infrastructure.

What makes AI Mills interesting and unique is that it does not opt for one massive hyperscale data center, but for smaller modular units that can be deployed more flexibly. This is relevant because the Netherlands is dealing with grid congestion and limited space for new data centers. The modular units are placed in locations where there is sufficient energy or even excess energy, such as wind farms. In this way, AI Mills is taking an innovative approach to energy efficiency.

The relevance of AI Mills therefore lies not only in technology, but especially in the broader strategic debate currently taking place in Europe.

By actively building a European AI infrastructure, AI Mills is making full AI independence a realistic prospect. In doing so, the company stands as a symbol of Europe’s effort to become less dependent on foreign tech giants and to gain greater control over critical technology.
